Welcome to the baking section of my website! Here you can find all of my posts related to bread and other baked goods like strudel, flammkuchen, and cakes. In the top section, you can find posts about the theory and technology of baked goods along with some posts discussing the cultural significance and history of bread in Germany. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you can find all of my baking recipes. These range from sweet goods like doughnuts and apple strudel to rustic bread like spelt bread and Swabian specialties like pretzels. My blog focuses mainly on savory baked goods. A lot of blogs on German food already feature a ton of traditional cake recipes but the baked goods you might find in a German bakery are only rarely featured on them. I want to fill in that gap because, for me, it is much more fun to bake savory goods.
Check out my new book on how to bake bread the German way:

This book covers the how’s and why’s of bread-making. It is a comprehensive guide on bread ingredients, techniques, and the general bread-making process. It helps you to gain a deeper understanding and enables you to bake bread without a recipe.

Millet Fritters with Carrots (‘Hirseküchle’)
Millet fritters are a great alternative to meatballs. They are crispy on the outside and moist on the inside thanks to the addition of grated carrots. Served with yogurt or any sauce of your liking, they are a great dish to have on the dinner table. The preparation of these […]
Wild Garlic Potato Noodles (‘Bärlauch Schupfnudeln’)
I love these wild garlic potato noodles even more than I love wild garlic spätzle. The wild garlic season in Germany is short. But in April wild garlic grows like a weed in Southern Germany. It is everywhere! So during its short season that lasts less than 2 months, wild […]
Let’s talk about pepper – Part 4: South America
Historically, South America hasn’t been a major pepper producing region. Yet Brazil is one of the major pepper producers nowadays. It was after World War II, that pepper cultivation became widespread in Brazil. The cultivars grown there are usually less spicy than the ones grown in Southeast Asia. I don’t […]
Rice with Meat (‘Reisfleisch’)
Rice with meat is a traditional home-cooking dish that only requires one pot. It’s usually prepared with fatty pork and super delicious. It’s said that Austrian people first learned about this dish from the Balkan countries. Rice with meat is basically a goulash to which you add rice. The rice […]
Traditional Baguettes (4 ingredients only)
It might seem a little weird for you to find a recipe for French baguettes on a German food blog. But let me tell you: German people love baguettes and they are insanely popular here. I would pick a French baguette over a plain breakfast bread roll any day. There’s […]
